Get to know the Internet, cuz IT knows YOU!

Image
If you are only figuring out the Internet, Google has a book for you!

Mailto webmail in your fav browser

Image
Most of us use Gmail, but there's a small minority still clinging to hotmail or Ymail, because that's what their ancestors used when they were chasing wild goats. For all, here's how to get your browser to use you email service whenever you click an email address.

Google Online Services via Command Line Interface CLI

Image
After wasting time and intense frustration, I have decided that waiting for videos of photos to upload to online services is not something I want to do from my laptop. I shall thus explore alternatives..

Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot Tips and Tweaks

Image
After having a look at the more specific driver issues related to installing the latest version of Ubuntu linux on my Toshiba Tablets , it’s time to have a more general – and, hopefully, useful to more readers – look at what’s new and what needs to be changed in this new install. Obviously, I’m building upon my previous install notes ( 10.10 ).

Block Ads and Get Youtube Premium Free!

Image
Youtube is a wonderful platform and its creators deserve to be able to make a living. Many of them actually do by serving Google ads (with Google keeping a significant portion of ad revenue) or, via some Youtube subscription model that was first called Red and now is Premium (this may be inaccurate, I’m not following it closely). If, like me, you dislike a model where Google decides who is worthy of support and who’s not and gets to keep the lion’s share of ad revenue, this article might be for you. If, on the other hand, you have the means to purchase YouTube Premium and don’t have time to waste, go ahead and get it, it’s definitely worth it!

Fraud 101: Spam, spim, chain mail and other time-wasters

We recently learned that Canada's Competition Bureau (7) took the unusual step of warning the public about several hoaxes perpetrated on the Internet and not only (9). This is a good opportunity for this article, since after getting for the nth time a chain email from a friend, I had already decided it's about time I write this little ditty, in the hope that if I am to receive more junk / chain mail from friends, they will at least be more interesting / innovative.

Top Alternatives to GooglePages

Image
With GooglePages suffering a slow and controlled death, it is high time to look at hosting alternatives. We even include a section for Blogger’s who only want to host their .js scripts.

Instagram is Top Privacy Invasive App

Image
Privacy is a concept long sacrificed on the altar of convenience. More legislative attention improves temporarily the situation, until the large conglomerates learn their way around it. We look at a recent analysis made by pCloud.

Flipper Zero with WiFi board and Video Module Raspberry Pico

Image
Having recently purchased a new Flipper Zero together with a Wi-Fi Dev module and a Video Game (Raspberry Pi) module, I'm writing an updated guide on how to make the best use of these devices.

Installing VMware Server 2 on latest Ubuntu

Image
After unsuccessfully trying to install VMware Server 2 in prior versions of Ubuntu I finally managed to get it to work. I still can't believe it was this easy! Finally, I can run WLW and play with all the other OSs I've been dying to try!

Android Root-ing and Backup

Image
A problem with my (micro) SD card unmounting itself (the famous “unexpectedly removed” error) pushed me to finally backup, root and fully move my apps to the SD card.

DefCON's DNS, OpenDNS and DotCON's Nisemono

A larger than life, but little known and little understood Internet security flaw gets coverage (again!). We keep wondering about OpenDNS and mention the Nisemono contest, since DefCON and DotCON sound soooo similar :) It is hard to believe that certain vulnerabilities so pervasive and so fundamental have persisted for such a long time unpatched. Yet this is the reality Dan Kaminsky ( A ), a security researcher, has been trying to change.

gaming laptop upgrade I: cloning SDD drive to 1TB NVME

Image
I purchased my gaming laptop ( .ca ) in a hurry, at a time when many others were buying theirs, and was unable to get all that I wanted. Compromises had to be made. But this past December, I took the plunge and upgraded the memory and the hard drive (which was already quite fast, but a little too small).

DD-WRT on Cisco Linksys WRT610n router

Image
Although I have purchased my WRT-610n router (pretty much the same as the newer E3000 ) many months ago, only recently was I forced to install the Linux firmware on it – mostly due to lack of time and procrastinating. This is primarily due to some issues with my Internet connectivity, which I am hoping could be solved with a better router.

Resolving Flash Problems and Memory Leaks

Image
Adobe Flash was for a long time the dominant platform for animation and quick video and audio publishing on the web. The advent of Microsoft Silverlight and similar technologies hasn't changed that much, despite Flash's well known problems: high resource utilization and security holes. The many Flash updates can result in a situation where multiple Flash versions coexist on your system, resulting in security holes and memory leaks. In this article, we are looking at how to identify and resolve such conflicts.

VOIP from scratch IV – setup and customization

Image
Now that we know what VOIP is and the hardware and the provider have been chosen, what's left is to do some finer configuration of our service and start VOIP-ing!

Massive, unfixed security flaw at Passport Canada

Image
We just learned about a very serious security flaw in the Passport Canada website accepting online applications .

Another strange Bell experience

Image
I think among Canada's telecommunications monopolies, Bell Canada is the benevolent, customer oriented giant (while Rogers is the ugly duckling). Yet now and again, Bell Canada's customer service manages to disappoint.

Top 17 Resources to learn CSS online

Linux Tor Relay on Pentium 75

Image
For a long time I’ve been toying with the idea of running a TOR relay for my own privacy reasons and to give back to the community as well. Though my router and NAS (and possibly even my WD Live box) have enough chutzpah to run it, I prefer to use a very old computer instead for reasons of separation (security). For a while, I even considered buying a Raspberry Pi or some other similar cheap gizmo, then I remember I have a bunch of old computers I've never used..
