Instagram is Top Privacy Invasive App

Privacy is a concept long sacrificed on the altar of convenience. More legislative attention improves temporarily the situation, until the large conglomerates learn their way around it. We look at a recent analysis made by pCloud.

Block Ads and Get Youtube Premium Free!

Image
Youtube is a wonderful platform and its creators deserve to be able to make a living. Many of them actually do by serving Google ads (with Google keeping a significant portion of ad revenue) or, via some Youtube subscription model that was first called Red and now is Premium (this may be inaccurate, I’m not following it closely). If, like me, you dislike a model where Google decides who is worthy of support and who’s not and gets to keep the lion’s share of ad revenue, this article might be for you. If, on the other hand, you have the means to purchase YouTube Premium and don’t have time to waste, go ahead and get it, it’s definitely worth it!

Smarten up your Android smartphone I: SSH, SSHD

Image
There seems to be a mistaken belief that in order to gain superuser access (or to do serious development or, to use a popular misnomer, “hacking”, one has to “jailbreak”, or as it is called everywhere other than iOS, “root”. Let us see how anyone can do most of it using an excellent and completely free hack (or app) called Termux.

Free TV or IPTV on your Android or laptop with Kodi

Image
There was a time when having a “media center” involved building an HTPC, which was a difficult project to undertake, wrought with frustrations and hardware/software incompatibilities. OTA HDTV came along and many felt left behind just when they had gotten things working. Some experimented with Popcorn while others played with NZBs/NNTP/Usenet downloads. After all these years, one media interface has emerged dominant: XBMC / Boxi / Kodi.

Tasker Photo on Failed Login and Backup to SD on Unrooted MM

Image
Having recently upgraded my smartphone for the nth time, I found myself needing to automate a few tasks. Unlike my previous foray into Tasker automation however, my new phone is not rooted, nor do I plan to root it anytime soon.

Android Root-ing and Backup

Image
A problem with my (micro) SD card unmounting itself (the famous “unexpectedly removed” error) pushed me to finally backup, root and fully move my apps to the SD card.

Android Automation with Tasker

After playing a bit with Crafty Apps EU’s Tasker we share with you our first two automation profiles, as we think they are simple enough for starters and no phone should be left without them.

If you have ever participated in an auction, you may have sometimes lost what seemed like a very good deal at the very last minute. We will describe here how and why that might happen and how you could as well win an auction at the last minute.

When both Broadband & Tethering FAIL

Image
I'm through some infurating issues. When my home broadband Internet connection failed, I was not alarmed, as I had my iPhone tethering available through Fido 3G. I have done that before, it's never been an issue. Except that this time, it did not work.

Apparently, I could have gotten one with Gizmo5 back when I signed up with them, but I didn't know. Oh well, it's still neat!

jailbreak for fun and profit

Image
In the previous article on the joys and pitfalls of freeing your Apple portable devices from Steve Jobs technoid BDSM prison, we briefly discussed the advantages and disadvantages of jailbreak. In this article we get a bit more hands-on and look at the actual methods of achieving this. Although just released, iPad has already been jailbroken (see video below) and an announcement will be made about iPhone OS 4.0 soon.

iPod and iPhone JailBreaking

Image
I've heard a lot about the community of iHacks. Apparently, Apple restricts their devices and limits their capabilities. Some people have made it their mission to free their devices and allow them to perform at full potential. Here is how that is accomplished.

What if we told you that you can buy a cheap laptop and, for the price you would normally pay for a Windows based one, you can get a laptop running a much more stable operating system AND send a similar laptop to a child in Africa?
