Installing VMware Server 2 on latest Ubuntu

After unsuccessfully trying to install VMware Server 2 in prior versions of Ubuntu I finally managed to get it to work. I still can't believe it was this easy! Finally, I can run WLW and play with all the other OSs I've been dying to try!

As this wasn't my first try, I had already downloaded the .tar.gz file and Radu Cotescu patch. If you haven't, just follow the appropriate links below. Note that the "script" link will download a .tar.gz file as well, containing all that you need, at once.

I simply followed the prompts, hitting enter to answer with the default with almost all the questions. I only chose differently when adding users: namely, instead of accepting the root, I added my own username.

I have yet to actually try the install with an appliance, but I am downloading it as I write this. My NAS, where I already have a few images, is currently inaccessible for technical reasons. I decided to download a "browser appliance" submitted by Christophe Deprez, which seems to be Firefox 3.6.3 installed on CentOS 5.3. It has 256 MB allocated memory, the appliance size is 513 MB and the 7zip is 287 MB - login/password vmware.

Find my install log below with the license etc removed.
